This faded relic is a thing of the past. We have total of 3 of them left in
Detroit, and one is out of service. All 3 should really be "rips". They are
all in sad shape. They are mostly used for shoving longer trains over
crossings through the ghetto. You certainly wouldn't wanna' nap or eat lunch in
there!

There was a time when we virtually lived in these cabin cars,
up to sixteen hours a day. Food was cooked on the stove, to the left
behind the conductors desk. A brake pipe gauge and the conductors valve
(to stop the train from the rear) are on the right bulkhead.

A used jet engine provides the heat for this snow blower/melter. Used to thaw switches.
The sand car is an even older relic, still stenciled Penn Central. This is at
North Yard next to the tracks where the engines are serviced. (So-called,
"serviced"---- which is another craft, or class of jobs that has been cut
down to almost nothing around here).
Comments and photo - Jerry Vettraino. Note that the sand car is no longer on 'live' rail.
