Subject: Head on collision on Pilbara Rail outside Seven Mile.
Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 16:37:53 +1000
There was a horrific head on collision on Pilbara Rail outside Seven Mile on Saturday afternoon involving a loaded ore train.
Thought you might like to see these shots of a head on in the Pilbra area of West Australia. The derailed locos are part of a loaded consist that was routed into the siding after a CTC (central traffic control, allowing the dispatching of multiple trains on a single track using sidings) failure caused the switch to the siding to operate to the reverse position in front of the loaded train.
The driver of the empty saw what was happening and took off out of his cab. His only injury was a twisted ankle. The driver on the loaded train dumped his air (put the train into an emergency brake application) but with 20000 ton of ore at 50 km/hr the train speed only reduced to 20 km/hr at the time of the collision.
This driver (engineer) received minor injuries but was trapped in his loco
cab till help arrived.

What happened here? 100 car freight train comes around a curve at 1 AM and runs into a landslide. Another train had gone
through only an hour before. Engineer and Conductor took a scary ride, emerged with bumps and bruises - and one
